SIDS and Professionals

The California SIDS Program has created this section of our website to help professionals such as coroners, emergency personnel, first responders, health care providers, law enforcement officers, and public health nurses to provide services, care, and assistance to families and others affected by a SIDS death.

  • Crisis Support: provides professionals with useful, one to three page crisis and bereavement handouts, for assisting those who have experienced the sudden loss of an infant.

  • SIDS Facts: contains the latest SIDS statistics and what we do know about SIDS.

  • Resources: consists of state/national agencies and professional organizations offering information, educational/grief resources, factual materials, data and statistics about SIDS, other infant/child deaths and related topics.

  • Education: contains descriptions of upcoming trainings, SIDS conferences and educational opportunities for professionals in many fields.

  • Materials: offers professionals SIDS booklets, brochures and other materials to view, download, and reproduce for yourself, your staff, and families in your care.

  • Protocols: includes legislatively mandated standardized protocols for conducting and reporting the death scene investigation and autopsy and documenting PHN support services for a presumed SIDS death.

  • SIDS Laws: contains all legislation passed in California including the Boatwright bills, which fund SIDS support services, education, and training.

  • Frequently Asked Questions: answers some of the most common questions asked by professionals.
